Finnish President Alexander Stubb took to the golf clubs to find a way to diplomacy with Donald Trump.
The next day, Ukraine’s President thanked Volodymr Zelenskyj Stubb for Finland’s support.
As the first Nordic head of state visited Stubb, US President Trump visited his home ground in Florida.
The two played a golf round together – and, according to Trump, won a competition at the president’s own golf club – and then discussed, among other things, the war in Ukraine.
– I emphasized Finland and Europe’s strong support for Ukraine and that there is only one initiator of the war. I pointed out that you can’t trust Putin, says Stubb at a press conference the day after the 18 holes Golf.
According to Hufvudstadsbladet, he also told Trump that Russia only understands strength.
– This means that we have to maximize the pressure. There are two possibilities: sanctions and use of frozen assets.
Stubb also presented a proposal for a suitable date for a ceasefire, April 20 – which is also a date that the United States has previously been stated to be aimed at.
– Then it has been three months since Trump took office and that is Easter, says Stubb.
Zelenskyj writes on X on Sunday evening that he talked to stump on Sunday and that he thanks for Finland’s support.
Stubb should have shared details from his conversation with Trump and Zelenskyj writes that he wants to see a closer cooperation with the United States to “find ways to force Russia into peace and work for security guarantees that must be our next step after a ceasefire”.
