Zelenskyi on ending the war: NATO security guarantees cannot apply to territories occupied by Russia | News in brief

Zelenskyi on ending the war NATO security guarantees cannot apply

The president of Ukraine tells more about his views on ending the war. Fresh EU leaders visited Kyiv for the first time.

Ukraine must be invited to become a member of the military alliance NATO, so that the survival of the state is guaranteed, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi says.

However, NATO’s security guarantees, such as Article 5 regarding the member states’ defense obligation, could not apply to the territories occupied by Russia in Ukraine, says Zelenskyi.

According to Zelenskyi, “skeptical” European states stand in the way of the NATO membership invitation. Zelenskyi did not name the “skeptics” by name.

However, Zelenskyi believes that the United States could still persuade European countries to support Ukraine’s NATO membership.

However, Ukraine needs concrete decisions from the Western allies on security guarantees and new arms aid before talks with Russia can begin, Zelenskyi added.

On Sunday, Ukraine received freshly baked EU leaders as its guests, when the president of the European Council António CostaEU High Representative for External Relations Kaja Kallas and the Slovenian Commissioner for EU Enlargement Marta Kos visited Kiev.

– On my first state visit in my office, I will deliver a clear message: the European Union wants Ukraine to win this war, Kallas wrote on the message service X.
