Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is supporting his controversial Argentine counterpart Javier Milei by attending Milei’s presidential inauguration on Sunday.

The announcement of Zelensky’s unexpected trip to Buenos Aires was made by the presidential office in Kyiv.

Javier Milei won somewhat unexpectedly in the Argentine election on October 22. He had then gone to the polls with drastic promises such as dismantling large parts of the Argentine state apparatus, shutting down the central bank and introducing the American dollar as Argentine currency.

But Milei, who before the presidential election was a member of the Argentine parliament, showed his undivided support for Ukraine after the Russian invasion. Among other things, Milei brought a Ukrainian flag to the parliament, which he waved during the plenary session.

Milei has also been criticized for populist and sometimes violent actions during the election campaign.

During the flight to Argentina, Zelensky took the opportunity to stop over in Cape Verde for a meeting with President Jose Ulisses Cerreia e Silva, the presidential office announces.
