At least eight people were killed and 18 others injured in a triple Russian strike Wednesday morning in Cherniguiv, a large city in northern Ukraine, according to a new report released by the mayor.
“There are eight dead and 18 injured following Russian missile strikes on Cherniguiv. Search and rescue operations continue,” Mayor Oleksandr Lomako said on Telegram.
At 9:03 a.m. local time (7:03 a.m. GMT), “three explosions occurred in the city,” the mayor had indicated earlier on television. It was a “direct strike on a social infrastructure building,” he had previously said.
The governor of the eponymous region of which Cherniguiv is the capital indicated that the attack had affected “almost” the city center, reporting “dead civilians” and “many injured”.
Zelensky points out lack of air defense
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that his army had not been able to prevent the triple Russian strike on the city of Cherniguiv, due to a lack of air defense means due to the running out of Western military aid.
“This would not have happened if Ukraine had received enough air defense equipment and if the world’s determination to resist Russian terror had been sufficient,” lamented Volodymyr Zelensky on social networks.
