As Russia’s attacks on Ukraine continued, Ukraine stopped the flow of energy to Europe. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy, who met with the European Union (EU) Commission Energy Member Kadri Simson in the capital of Ukraine, Kiev, announced that Russia had stopped the energy flow to Europe due to the attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Zelenskiy said, “Unfortunately, we have suspended this process (energy flow to Europe) because the Russian Federation hit our energy system with missiles and kamikaze drones. But I am sure that when everything is back to normal and the situation in our energy systems returns to normal, we will be able to export electricity to Europe. We will continue to do so,” he said.

Continuing to convey information to Simson about the latest state of the energy systems in his country, Zelenskiy stated that the hydroelectric systems as well as the thermal power plants were damaged due to Russia’s attacks, and that 40 percent of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was severely damaged.

Describing these attacks of Russia as “terrorist attacks”, Zelenskiy stated that they also continue to take measures against attacks on strategic energy systems.
