While Russia’s military intervention against Ukraine on February 24 continues, Russian President Putin “Attacks on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant could lead to a major disaster” The explanation has arrived. On the other hand, the scientists modeled a virtual simulation that shows which areas the radiation will spread in the event of an accident in Zaporizhia.
“LARGE-SCALE DISASTER” WARNING
Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron. The main agenda item of the leaders’ meeting was the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Kremlin Press Service reported that Russian leader Putin mentioned the developments in the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant in his speech to Macron. In the statement, “The situation around Ukraine was discussed from various aspects. Vladimir Putin emphasized that the systematic bombing of the territory of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant by the Ukrainian army, in particular, entails a large-scale risk of disaster that may cause radiation pollution. He underlined the importance of sending the Energy (IAEA) mission as soon as possible. The Russian side confirmed its readiness to provide the necessary assistance to the inspectors of the institution,” the statement said.
WHICH COUNTRIES ARE AT DANGER?
Scientists from the Hydrometeorology Institute of Ukraine, affiliated to the National Academy of Sciences, modeled which regions the radiation would be carried by the air and create pollution after a possible accident in Zaporizhia, with a simulation prepared based on the weather conditions between August 15 and 18.
As a result of the modeling, it was stated that the radiation initially moved towards Belarus, Poland and the Baltic countries, but the main direction of the radioactive particles was the east of the country, namely the Donbas region.
“At the end of the simulated period, the main direction of radionuclide transport is to the east, as a result of which increases in the concentration of radioactive aerosols in the surface air of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions can be observed,” the statement of scientists pointing to the Donbas region said. The Institute emphasized that they will continue to model according to the weather conditions in different time periods.
WHAT IS RUSSIA SAYING?
The Russian Ministry of Defense, on the other hand, made an assessment of the situation at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant and claimed that the power plant was bombed by the Ukrainian army as of July 18. The ministry stated that it was investigating and that the attacks were launched from the Marganets and Nikopol sides. The ministry also prepared a map of another scenario prepared by Russian scientists.
