Zack Snyder likes Rebel Moon 2 better than Part 1 – and the reason is the biggest problem with the sci-fi spectacle on Netflix

Zack Snyder likes Rebel Moon 2 better than Part 1

Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire was a complete failure with many critics, as can be seen on Metacritic, for example. A major weakness of Netflix’s biggest sci-fi film of the year is the one-dimensional characters that are sidelined for larger scenes in Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scar Maker. The film seems like the minimalist prelude to the actual symphony. And Even director Zack Snyder apparently prefers the sequel, as screenwriter Kurt Johnstad explains in the Moviepilot interview.

Zack Snyder prefers Rebel Moon 2: “The first film is an introduction”

Johnstad revealed in an interview with Moviepilot:

[Zack Snyder] recently told me that he liked the second film even more than the first. In his opinion, delivers [das Sequel] just everywhere. The first film is an introduction to the world, with which you get to know the characters and the team. And from the second film onwards, this emotional foundation pays off.

Johnstad simply explains the dramaturgical structure of the Rebel Moon franchise on Netflix. But inadvertently, his explanation and Zack Snyder’s opinion also overlaps with the criticism of many fans: In fact, for many, Rebel Moon 1 feels like a kind of intro or prelude, which is simply intended to introduce the characters to the audience.

In any case, the introduction to the Rebel Moon world did not pay off emotionally for many critics. But if even the director prefers Part 2 and screenwriter Johnstad places the first film close to a structural necessity, perhaps there is still hope for the franchise. Will the sequel save everything?

When is Rebel Moon 2 coming to Netflix?

Rebel Moon 2 will be released on April 19, 2023 appear on Netflix. The first trailer for the Netflix sequel is based on an action masterpiece and promises audiences the spectacle they may have been hoping for in Part 1.
