The Youtube video giant announces this Thursday, October 27 that it will certify the accounts of doctors and caregivers in general. The goal is to highlight reliable videos and fight against health misinformation.
Fake news is legion on the internet. The main way to protect yourself against this is to verify the source of the information. As such, Youtube wants to improve the dissemination of health information on its network.
Certified medical accounts
With the Covid-19 pandemic, we have seen that health is a particularly sensitive subject and that any false information can quickly create a buzz, especially on social networks. To fight against this misinformation and help Internet users recognize reliable accounts, Youtube has decided to officially certify the accounts of doctors and other caregivers.
“Today, we are announcing that for the first time, certain categories of healthcare professionals and health information providers can apply to make their channels eligible for our healthcare product features that have launched in the United States. United last year” YouTube said in a statement.
For the video platform, “cIt includes health source information panels that help viewers identify videos from authoritative sources (…) so people can more easily navigate and assess health information online.”
Degrees required
The certification process will go through a verification of the caregivers’ diplomas. Youtube plans to open these certifications to mental health professionals as well. Remember that this is already the case for institutions.
Thus, by seeing a certified account, you will be able to recognize it immediately and know that the videos posted – and therefore the information you will be able to hear – come from a health professional. However, this Youtube Health Sources is currently only open to US and German residents. It will therefore be necessary to remain vigilant for a while longer on content coming from other countries.
