    According to a recent American study, our smartphones are real nests of allergies, which it is essential to neutralize.

    We know: smartphones contain more bacteria than a subway bar or a toilet bowl. But according to a new study published in the journal Annals of Allergy Asthma & Immunologythey would also be stuffed with allergens.

    Smartphones are potential carriers of environmental hazards, such as allergens, β-D glucans (BDG) and endotoxin. The prevalence of these toxins and the effectiveness of cleaners targeting these agents on phones have yet to be studied.“, say scientists from the University of Iowa (USA).

    In view of these discoveries, the research team wanted to determine the level of allergens present on smartphones.

    To do this, the researchers analyzed the substances present on the surface of the smartphones of 15 volunteers, using electrostatic wipes.

    Results ? The smartphones showed high levels of BDG (beta-D-glucan, from yeasts and fungi) and endotoxins (toxic compounds of bacterial origin). Cat and dog allergens have also been detected on pet owners’ smartphones.

    BDGs are present in the cell walls of fungi and have been found in many environments and surfaces, causing chronic symptoms of irritation and airway disorders“, emphasizes Hana Ruran, lead author of the study.

    The most effective cleaning products

    According to the researchers, cleaners containing chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride are the most effective in lowering BDG and endotoxin levels on phones.

    Regarding cat and dog allergens, the combination benzyl benzoate / tannic acid seems to have been most successful.

    The researchers also point out that the elimination of allergens also requires regular cleaning.
