While the current acting and screenwriting strike is paralyzing almost all of Hollywood, according to Variety, a few projects have received a filming permit from the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA because, as independent productions, they are not subject to the AMPTP (Studio Alliance of film and television producers) are bound. One of these projects is a movie about dead unicorns, Jenna Ortega and a Marvel star: Death of a Unicorn.
Help, I ran over a unicorn: Jenna Ortega directs Death of a Unicorn
Death of a Unicorn is being produced by acclaimed indie studio A24 (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and is set to begin filming in Hungary soon, according to Comicbook. Not much is known about the movie yet, but what’s already leaked sounds like it would also fit nicely into an episode of Jenna Ortega’s Netflix hit Wednesday:

Jenna Ortega as Wednesday
A father (Paul Rudd) and his daughter (Jenna Ortega) are driving home in their car when the unbelievable happens: they run over an animal. But not just any animal, but a unicorn! And we can imagine that this one accidental mythical creature murder in Death of a Unicorn is not without consequences.
Why Jenna Ortega was cast for the daughter role alongside Marvel’s comedy-trained Ant-Man star isn’t hard to see: Death of a Unicorn fits her signature role of Wednesday Addams (and her cast in Beetlejuice 2) perfectly: a bit bizarre , a bit macabre and still funny.
We can’t yet tell if the film will drift more in the horror or comedy direction given its premise, but in either case, Jenna Ortega (thanks to appearances in Scream and Yes Day) is prepared. Death of a Unicorn will probably be at the earliest end of 2024 come to the cinema.

Nevertheless, there is criticism – especially from the leading actress Jenna Ortega herself. The series was apparently shot under great time pressure. Hendrik Busch and Matthias Hopf discuss what needs to improve in season 2.

There are also shortcomings in terms of content: was the love triangle around Wednesday really appropriate? And does Wednesday even look like a series from master director Tim Burton Series?
