It can be difficult with a manager who asks inappropriate questions. But how much does your boss get to interfere in your private life?

When does the manager break the law?

Löwstedt explains that managers need to behave in accordance with the Work Environment Act. This means that the employer must work for a good working environment and therefore it may be wise to avoid asking or saying things that do not go in accordance with this.

– Furthermore, an employer may not discriminate against an employee, and this includes job seekers, due to any of the grounds for discrimination listed in the Discrimination Act: Gender, gender identity or expression, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and age, he says.

There is also a ban addressed to parents. According to the Parental Leave Act, the employee may not be disadvantaged for reasons connected to parental leave.

– Questions about matters that may fall under the grounds of discrimination or specifically about parental leave do not in themselves mean that someone has been discriminated against or disadvantaged.

He continues:

– But if someone doesn’t get a job or say a promotion because of one of the discrimination grounds, or that they have to take parental leave, then it can be seen as discrimination which can lead to damages.
