Young man seriously injured in Forsmark – police were only alerted six hours later

The man is employed at the nuclear power plant and was injured at Forsmark’s third reactor, Forsmark 3, which has already been shut down for annual maintenance.

– There was welding work going on and the person was involved in that work, says Charlotta Eldelind, communications manager at Forsmark.

Emergency services came to the scene and the man was taken by ambulance helicopter to hospital, something Gefle Daily was the first to report.

The police were called several hours later

The accident happened after 10 a.m. on Friday, but the alarm did not reach the police until 3.55 p.m. The reason for this is currently unclear.

– We will have to look into that further. Normally, we receive information about this type of alarm immediately, says police spokesperson Tobias Ahlén-Svalbro.

– We first alerted our internal emergency services and at the same time the alarm went to an ambulance. We have our routines that we report to the police and the Swedish Work Environment Agency in the event of accidents, but what was most urgent was an ambulance. We have to look into it with the police, says Charlotta Eldelind.

Suspected of causing bodily harm

The police came to Forsmark at 8 p.m., cordoned off the place, heard witnesses and left at 10 p.m. The site is still cordoned off pending a technical examination, which will tentatively take place on Monday.

A preliminary investigation has been launched into work environment violations and causing bodily harm. Something that usually happens in accidents to investigate whether a crime has been committed. In addition to its internal investigation, Forsmark has involved the Work Environment Agency.

– These jobs were prepared, but we currently do not know what has happened. The investigation will have to show that. Before we resume the welding work, we have to make sure that we are working in the right way and that everyone feels safe, says Charlotta Eldelind.
