Young girls feel worse than boys – the gap continues to grow

Youth, and especially adolescence, can for many be a tumultuous period in life. According to junior high student Svante Asplund at Rotskärsskolan in Skutskär, he believes that many people feel both good and bad.

– A lot happens in adolescence and the mood fluctuates all the time, he explains.

The gap is growing

Twelve years ago, in 2011, 90 percent of boys and 81 percent of girls answered that they felt well or fairly well. This year’s corresponding figure is 80 and 58 percent, respectively.

This means a self-estimated deterioration of 23 percentage points for the girls, while the same figure for the boys is a decrease of 10 percent.

– It is sad that girls’ health has deteriorated, says Fanny Wallquist, also a junior high school student at Rotskärsskolan.
