Young children may be more likely to transmit Covid-19

What are the probabilities of contracting Covid-19 within the family circle? If the contraction of Covid-19 by a child is often benign, they can transmit it to those around them and cause more serious cases.

Canadian researchers have therefore measured the probabilities of transmission of young children compared to adolescents. The results are published in the journal Jama Pédiatrie.

A total of 6,280 Canadian households were measured between June 1 and December 31, 2020. In each household, at least one case, under the age of 18, of SARS-CoV-2 infections was present.

Results? Children aged 0 to 3 had a higher probability of transmission than adolescents aged 14 to 17. ” VSe which means younger children may have a higher risk of transmitting SARS-CoV-2 to caregivers and siblings in the household than older children Explain the researchers.

Why such a difference ? Putting a toddler in solitary confinement is “almost impossible” while regular hand washing and wearing a mask are also difficult to achieve.

The researchers recall the importance of barrier gestures (physical contact to be avoided, wear a mask and wash your hands regularly) and stress that an adult spreads the virus more than a child.
