You’ll never be able to see a superhero movie with Michael Keaton and Brendan Fraser, even though it’s already been made

In addition to the MCU, DC is also trying to establish a successful film universe with its comic book brand. This worked sometimes more, sometimes less well. There was supposed to be a Batgirl movie released last year that was well advanced but still never came out.

What was the Batgirl movie about? Not much is officially known about the plot, but the actors and roles were known.

  • Leslie Grace was Batgirl, a relatively unknown actress who previously appeared in the musical film In the Heights
  • Michael Keaton would have returned as Batman, who played the Bat-Man in the Tim Burton films
  • Brendan Fraser would have played Firefly, a classic Batman villain who is a former veteran who fights with fire
  • JKSimmons would have been Commissioner Gordon again, like in Justice League
  • That sounds like a good cast, especially with Brendan Fraser, who was on everyone’s lips again with The Whale. But even though the film was shot, it was never finished and therefore never released.

A release is not worth it

Why was the film canceled? There are many reasons why films can be canceled. Some films don’t even make it out of the conception phase, and a big issue is suddenly high costs or problems with the actors’ and directors’ schedules.

Batgirl was long past the conception phase. The film was shot in March 2022 and was therefore in post-production and was scheduled to appear on the streaming service HBO Max at the end of 2022. The cost was just under $90 million, and so it would have been a smaller superhero film that was supposed to appear exclusively on the streaming service.

The reason for canceling the project seems pretty simple: save money. It may sound strange not to release a film that you’ve already spent almost $90 million on, but in addition to post-production, films also have a few additional costs.

As Variety reports on the topic, global marketing could have cost tens of additional millions of dollars. It is also questionable whether the film, which would not have been as marketable as the other big heroes due to its size, would have attracted many viewers to the streaming service.

    Just another tax write-off

The production of Batgirl had the unfortunate timing of being in the middle of the merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery. This was accompanied by strategic changes in the handling of DC and the comic book films, where James Gunn was also promoted to head of DC Studios.

As IndieWire reports, Batgirl and many other productions were treated as tax write-offs, which meant that many production costs could be saved. However, this has the negative effect that this film may never be released and may not be sold to another studio.

Such a decision is of course frustrating for the actors in the film. This denies a newcomer in particular the chance to gain a foothold in a larger franchise. But Brendan Fraser in an evil role would also have been an interesting aspect of the film.
