Chrome users will soon be able to see a Gemini shortcut in their address bar to chat directly with the AI. A faster way to collect information, without scouring the Internet.
In the race to dominate the generative artificial intelligence market, Google is following in Microsoft’s footsteps and intends to integrate its Gemini AI into all its services – even if its approach is less aggressive than that of the Redmond firm for the moment. As a reminder, its chatbot, which is based on Gemini Pro – one of the company’s most powerful large language models (LLM) – is designed to help users in their daily lives, whether to write texts, plan meetings, events, generate images, summarize documents, write emails or simply save time browsing. HAS Ultimately, Gemini should even replace Google Assistant. Also, the Mountain View firm is gradually integrating it into its ecosystem, such as Google Messages, where certain beta testers can now communicate directly with the AI (see our article), but also in Google Maps and in Gmail. The Mountain View firm would even consider offering premium functions, based on generative artificial intelligence, on Google Search, integrated into the Gemini Advanced paid subscription (see our article).
This time, the Internet giant is seeking to integrate its artificial intelligence into its Chrome browser, directly in the address bar – the famous omnibox – through an extension. Simply write “@gemini” before entering it to directly access the chatbot’s services, without having to go to its official website. Note that this function is still in the testing phase at the moment, and is therefore only available in the Chrome Canary version.
Gemini in Chrome: how to access the AI in the address bar?
To be able to use Gemini directly in Chrome, you must go through Chrome Canary, Google’s channel that allows developers and enthusiasts to test new browser features and give feedback on how to improve them. However, certain indicators must be defined, some of which are already present in the stable version of Chrome
► Download the latest version of Chrome and launch the browser. Then typee chrome://flags in the address bar and press the key Entrance to validate.
► You arrive on a new page entitled Experiments. which presents all the experimental functions of Chrome.
► In the search box at the top, type Starter Pack and validate.
► The page then displays the results of its search by presenting two options.
► Click in the drop-down menu to the right of the option Expansion pack for the Site search starter pack. and select Enabled pre-prod url.
► All you have to do is restart Google Chrome Canary to access @gemini in the omnibox.
Activation via flags indicates that Google wants to soon make Gemini accessible to a wider audience via the address bar. However, we do not yet know when this will be the case. Google itself has not yet commented on this new function. We’ll have to wait a bit!
