You used to have to farm for weeks in WoW for one thing, now it’s going to be free

In World of Warcraft you used to have to work weeks towards a mount. Those times are over now – because you simply get it as a gift.

The oldest veterans of World of Warcraft can still remember that it took many days to farm to eventually own a mount. Some had to farm for a long time or scrounge up money from their friends and guildmates to avoid having to walk further through the countryside.

But that time is finally over. Unlocking the Mount skill in World of Warcraft will not only be free, it will also happen automatically.

What will be changed in riding? With Patch 10.1.5, characters will automatically learn their Mount skill once they reach the appropriate level. It is then no longer necessary to visit a riding instructor and the learning fee is also completely waived.

In the future, veterans, but also newcomers, will save a lot of gold when leveling, which can then be invested in other things, such as equipment, potions or fancy mounts.

Here’s how riding has changed over the years: In the first version of World of Warcraft, heroes could roam Azeroth with a mount quite late. At level 40, provided you have enough gold, you learn the “normal” riding skill. Then at level 60 came “epic” riding—again, assuming you could raise the gold. Because for the epic riding you needed almost 1,000 gold pieces and that could mean several weeks of farms in the days of “Vanilla”.

Over the years and expansions, this has become easier and easier. Riding can now be learned much earlier – from level 10 – and the gold costs are almost trivial, apart from epic flying. Most characters accumulate enough gold during questing to afford horseback riding.

When is the change coming? There is no release date for patch 10.1.5 yet. At Blizzard’s current release speed, it should probably be in late June or early July. As soon as there is a reliable date, we will of course report about it.
