Astarion is one of the first companions you can add to your party or play as an Origin character in Baldur’s Gate 3. As a vampire, he can bite opponents on command. But also his own companions. And their funny reactions are definitely worth the little nibble.
How can you bite your party members? Once you know Astarion’s true nature as a vampire, the Bite action will appear on his action hotbar. This allows you to bite a desired target once per short rest – the hit rate is 100%.
The victim takes two D4 piercing damage while Astarion gains two D4 life points and gains the Happy buff. This gives him +1 to attribute checks and saving throws. The other person, on the other hand, gets the debuff “Empty” and receives -1 on the things mentioned. The buff and debuff last until the next long rest.
You can read in our romance guide whether regular stand-ups for blood sucking in the camp will help you wrap Astarion around your finger:
Baldur’s Gate 3: Romance Guide for all companions – How to land with your companions
Important for everyone who regularly lets Astarion attack their own character: Bloodless can be healed with spells like Weak Mending and Lay on Hands.
Bite also works out of combat and on your party members. However, since not all of your comrades react particularly positively, we recommend that you briefly save with F5 before throwing yourself at them.
From “inappropriate” to poisoning – this is how your companions react to the bite
How do the campers react? Very different. Warlock Wyll comments the action dryly with “inappropriate”. Lae’zel doesn’t find the action particularly good either and ends it with an annoyed “enough!” A bite on Karlach’s neck, on the other hand, sets Astarion on fire, which she in turn comments with amusement: “What did you expect?”
When Shadowheart first learns of Astarion’s nature, she jokingly suggests putting a bell around his neck. But if you bite her, she remarks, visibly annoyed, that you’re on the same side.
In a conversation with Astarion, you can also learn how he thinks the other companions taste. But he’s way off the mark, at least with Gale:
Astarion suspects Gale’s blood would be like good brandy. However, if you bite the Mage of Waterdeep, Astarion gets the “poisoned” debuff and he complains that Gale tastes like bile. This in turn reprimands the vampire and asks dryly to be asked in advance next time.
But be careful: If you lay hands on Dog Scratches or the baby owl bear with Astarion, all of your comrades will see it as an immediate declaration of war. Weapons are drawn, the initiative is rolled!
Of course, all the other companions react accordingly entertaining. For spoiler reasons, we only presented the Origin characters here. In a TikTok video by l3earfat you can see the reaction of the featured companions, as well as a handful of others that appear later in the game.
