You sometimes hear that Germany doesn’t know any genre. Director Akiz’s Nightmare is the perfect proof to the contrary. The 2015 film blends fantasy elements with psychological horror and coming-of-age themes while never being intentionally or unintentionally funny.
A real cinematic feat, but for which you have to be quick: The Nightmare is only until July 12, 2023 to stream in the offer of the ARD media library. In just under 3 days (including today) the film will disappear – and is currently not available in any other streaming subscription.
That’s what fantasy horror The Nightmare is all about
At first glance, Tina (Carolyn Genzkow) has a pretty great teenage life. Her family lives in a chic house, she is popular and the next drug and alcohol pregnant party is only a phone call away. But that changes abruptly when, after a particularly wild night, Tina suddenly dreams of a bizarrely deformed being that she also begins to encounter in everyday life.
Overwhelmed by the situation, she turns to her parents (Julika Jenkins, Arnd Klawitter), who only give her one choice: a psychiatrist (Alexander Scheer) or admission to an institution. For Tina the boundaries between psychosis and reality disappear, she increasingly isolates herself from her circle of friends (played by Nura Habib Omer and Wilson Gonzalez Ochsenknecht, among others). Until she decides to get down to business – and prove once and for all that the nightmare doesn’t just exist in her head.

The exceptional German film had an absurdly small budget and packs psychological abysses into intense images
Intoxication, puberty and the classic teenage fear of being completely alone with your problems: The Nightmare would actually work without the horror creature of the same name. The abysmal fantasy aspect, this frightening as well as tender Relationship between a girl and her monsterbut what makes the film really special.
Director Akiz creates images between excess and isolation that develop an incredible pull. In places, his film is even reminiscent of the visual decadence of a Euphoria, although the team only had a budget of 86,000 euros for the production, as Akiz revealed in an interview with Der Spiegel.
No film funding, no big marketing campaign – maybe that’s why such a special film was created that you shouldn’t miss.
