That’s what the law says

News24 have talked to Thomas Andersson, who works as a police officer at the Ecocrime Authority. He explains why grocery stores may choose not to let the customer pay the cashier who then pays for the products.

He explains that businesses can refuse this payment method because it could be money laundering or economic money laundering.

– This means that if the cashier receives money from an unknown person and then mediates so that the person who wished her money receives an item and the cashier has no idea where the money comes from, she can in principle contribute to money laundering. She has received the proceeds of crime and ensured that the customer received an item, says Andersson.

He continues:

– Of course, a described event can also be legal. You can know the customer, it’s a limited amount and it happens once, so I don’t think you’ll be convicted of money laundering, but the advice is: Don’t help strangers convert their money into goods or other values. There is a risk that you are participating in money laundering.
