CAN ALLERGY CAUSE ASTHMA?
prof. Dr. Altınparmak said, “Allergy can cause breathing difficulties and even asthma in some patients. In some patients, it causes complaints of itching and watering in the eyes. Patients with a spring allergy in the eye immediately feel that this season is coming. Itching, redness and watering in the eyes are the most typical findings.
ATTENTION TO SEVERE ALLERGIES
Pointing out that spring allergies can be more severe and difficult, especially in younger children, Prof. Dr. Altınparmak said, “Families may see redness and swelling at the junction of the white layer (sclera) and the transparent layer (cornea) in the eyes of their children. “This is a sign of severe allergy,” he said.
FREQUENT ITCHING CAN CAUSE DISORDERING THE SHAPE OF THE EYE
Emphasizing that children with a favorite spring allergy must be treated, Prof. Dr. Altiparmak stated that frequent and severe itching of the eyes may cause weakening and deformation of the collagen fibers that make up the transparent layer over time.
IT CAN OCCUR EVEN IF THIS DISEASE IS NOT IN THE FAMILY
prof. Dr. Altiparmak said, “The transparent layer, which undergoes such a change, loses its structure like a mosque dome and starts to get sharp and take the shape of a cone. This is called keratoconus disease. Spring allergy in the eye is one of the most important risk factors for keratoconus disease. Keratoconus disease may occur due to severe scratching in a child who has never had keratoconus in his family.
CAN RESULT IN VISION LOSS
prof. Dr. Pointing out that ‘keratoconus’ is a disease that can be stopped with radiation therapy (Cornea cross-linking) and can be treated with hard or hybrid lenses, it can result in vision loss. For this purpose, anti-histaminic and cortisone drops are commonly used. In recent years, there are also drops that allow us to avoid the possible side effects of cortisone drops and can suppress the immune system more safely. prof. Dr. Altiparmak emphasized that it is necessary to take precautions against allergies from the very beginning so that spring allergy, which seems to be a simple one, does not turn into a serious vision loss.
