Many foods we eat cause high cholesterol, clogged arteries and an increased risk of heart attack. Experts warn about foods that are consumed with love but pose a great risk to health. Heart UK says that eating foods with a lot of saturated fat “changes the way the liver controls cholesterol.”
CAUSES CHOLESTEROL IN THE BLOOD

- Processed meats such as sausages, hamburgers, and kebabs
- Butter, margarine, goose fat and tallow
- Coconut and palm oils, cream of coconut
- Full-fat dairy products such as cream, milk, yogurt, fresh cream, and cheese.
UNSATURATED FAT IS HEALTHIER
Heart UK adds: “Many foods contain a mix of saturated and unsaturated fats. Try to choose foods with more unsaturated fat.” Considered heart-healthy, unsaturated fats in your diet outweigh the saturated fats in your diet, which may reduce the risk of heart disease and heart attack. Examples of unsaturated fats include:
- Oils from vegetables such as sunflower, safflower, rapeseed, olive, peanut, walnut and corn oil, Nuts and seeds
- Spreads based on these oils
- Nuts and seeds
- Avocado
- Oily fish such as herring, sardines, mackerel, salmon, and trout
STAY AWAY FROM TRANS FAT
In addition to saturated fat, there is another type of fat that people should watch out for.
The other type of fat that can increase cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease are trans fats. Heart UK says: “Trans fats are made when unsaturated fats such as vegetable oils are heated to high temperatures during food processing. Trans fats are sometimes found in pastries, cakes, biscuits, crackers, fried foods, takeaways and hard margarines.
