The cinema year 2024 again had many highlights such as Dune: Part Two, Challengers – Rivals and Anora. However, a great film never got a chance in Germany. In Jane Schoenbrun’s film, teenagers Owen (Justice Smith) and Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine) become friends in the 90s because they both watch the strange television series The Pink Opaque love. A mystery fantasy adventure in which two young women with supernatural powers fight against evil. The series soon captivates both of them so much that… Reality and fiction in an exhilarating mindfuck mix.
I can only agree with Scorsese’s praise and strongly recommend I Saw the TV Glow to you. This loving, detailed homage to the ’90s isn’t just heavy-handed retro nostalgia. Instead, Jane Schoenbrun has created an entirely original mythology of her own. In it, identity confusion, youthful feelings and disturbing obsessions grow into a tornado of intoxicating and disturbing impressions.
At the same time the film is one extremely personal transgender allegorywhich conveys the feeling of being a stranger in your own body and wanting to overcome your own gender in an intimate and heartbreaking way.
