Donnie Wahlberg: still 30 years young in Band of Brothers
Even after over 20 years, Band of Brother is still a masterpiece. The HBO war series from Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg follows the Easy Company into the Second World War in 1942. The paratrooper regiment works its way west from France to the German front and is repeatedly involved in costly battles. Using haunting individual fates, the series makes the horror of war tangible in a realistic, detailed way. Under the leader Richard Winters (Damian Lewis), the later Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg is also an important member of the soldierly “Group of brothers“.

Donnie Wahlberg in Band of Brothers
The 69 minute long episode is titled “breakthrough” (in English original: “The Breaking Point“) and deals with the (In)ability of leaders in war. Easy Company’s new direct superior, Norman Dike (Peter O’Meara), always disappears when he is most needed for a combat decision. Then it’s up to Donnie Wahlberg’s Sergeant Lipton to keep morale up.
It is a difficult border crossing, for the non-commissioned officer who is neither a simple foot soldier nor a real decision-maker. Lipton lends an understanding ear to his comrades’ complaints, but is also careful not to openly denigrate the incompetent boss. He masters the task with flying colors and unknowingly recommends himself as a leader who always knows what to do.
Donnie Wahlberg’s role in Band of Brothers could almost be considered complete Counterpart to his hotheaded NYPD detective in Blue Bloods read. Because where his Danny Reagan doesn’t take the rules too seriously, his Carwood Lipton, as a reliable soldier, keeps a cool head and grounds his fellow human beings.
The fact that we can easily take both roles from Wahlberg is what sets him apart as an actor. Anyone who doesn’t yet know his strong performance in the war series should definitely catch up on at least episode 7, which also works on its own. After that, you’re guaranteed to want the actor on your side in every situation when things get tough.
