At 20, World of Warcraft is one of the oldest MMORPGs on the market. But the game still looks solid – thanks to a decision.
There have been World of Warcraft for over 2 decades. Even if the game has lived through crises from time to time, the MMORPG from Blizzard seems to be doing quite well – both Classic and The War Within are well received by the community. The fact that World of Warcraft was able to stay on the market for so long is also due to a decision.
Because where other MMORPGs often look old and unsightly after a few years, Wow is largely protected from it. Because the comic style has survived the time and still looks solid now-because with comic graphics, photo-realistic details rarely depend on.

“That was one of the best decisions from WoW,” says the Game Director
Even the Game Director Ion Hazzikostas spoke in an interview with Vice a few days ago that this comic style has a large part in the fact that WoW still looks good even after 20 years. Because he said:
I can’t praise our art team enough, whether now or in the past 20 years. I think one of World of Warcraft’s best decisions was to choose a more stylized, picturesque art style that really passed the test of the time.
Even with the original graphics from back then. While people play and stream classic and hardcore. [Die Grafik] still looks solid, still has its charm. We further added details and use all these modern possibilities of graphics cards and computer hardware. But in a broader sense it is this core feeling of World of Warcraft that has made it so persistent that we will now start our third decade and have followed for another years.
If Blizzard had decided on a more realistic style at the time, after 20 years, World of Warcraft would no longer be what it is still – and the developers would have had to do it several times so that the game still seems modern in some way.
Suramar is still particularly popular – it is already 9 years old.
