Passages revolves around the German director Tomas (Franz Rogowski), his husband Martin (Ben Whishaw) and the young Agathe (Adèle Exarchopoulos), who all live in Paris. Director Tomas has just finished a film. During a long night of partying, Tomas meets Agathe and sleeps with her. She is the first woman he has sex with. Which he enthusiastically tells Martin the next day.

Franz Rogowski is a force of nature in Passages. His Tomas, who jumps back and forth between Agathe and his husband over the course of the film, is not just a ruthless narcissist. He can be loving, tender, childlike, shy. Then again he shouts at the people around him full of impatience and injured dignity. He is looking for life like a thirsty man in the desert.
Whishaw and Exarchopoulos are in no way inferior to him. They love him and are his target. Ira Sachs knows how to masterfully clash their personalities against each other: When Tomas meets Agathe’s conservative parents in a crop top, the scene seems so painful, because one cannot decide who really deserves understanding, a hearing and affection.
