With the Near Future series Familie Like Our-only with you director Thomas Vinterberg (the frenzy) presents a seven-part mini series from the heart of Denmark. He picks up current socio -political discussions and embeds them in a realistic Catastrophic scenario a. But does the series do justice to its exciting premise?
Dystopian Denmark in Familie Like Our’s: From prosperity to the refugee
The seven -part mini series is located in Denmark. Since the sea level continues to rise, the whole country must be evacuated. Suddenly 19-year-old Laura (Amaryllis August) and her divorced parents are Refugee. You will learn what it means to leave everything behind and to plan a new life in another country. This is where Oscar Prize winners Vinterberg, who had strongly committed himself to realism through Dogma 95 Manifesto at the beginning of his film career, speaks two current topics: climate consequences and migration policy.

Denmark has been pursuing a strict immigration policy for years that aims to reduce the flowers of asylum seekers and migrants. In Familie’s Like Oours the spit is turned over and The Danes are faced with their own politics. Little by little, the borders to Great Britain, Germany and the Nordic countries gradually close – there is no more space for them. Vinterberg also addresses the scissors between the poor and the rich: if you can afford it (and it is early enough), choose the target country, others are dependent on state programs without free choice.
Particularly frightening: the presented The flood crisis is not that far -fetchedbecause in Denmark the sea level escalates in real time. According to current calculations by the intergovernmental committee for climate changes (IPCC), the sea level increases over a meter by 2100-depending on the carbon emissions. An artificial island is even built to create additional living space and a storm wall. As soon as the sea level rises by at least six meters, Denmark actually sinks into the floods.
Families Like Ours focuses on the family
The series dispenses with dark future scenarios in the style of a cinematic Roland Emmerich natural spectacle. Rather, the water at Vinterberg slowly sneaks. Only at the dream level (some figures have visions), then only in the whole capital. The actual catastrophe is limited to a few news messages in which drone shots of Copenhagen are shown.
You can clearly see the town hall, Amalienburg and the Nytorv Square. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen turns Vinterberg to the Migration Ministry. The glass building is reminiscent of Adam Price ‘Danish political series Borgen – dangerous rope teams. However, in Familie’s Like Ours, politicians do not tact: inside, but the citizens: inside. Provisions from the outside direct what is going on in the area of the family. This enables many starting points.
How irrational dolls controlled by love
The consequence of the crisis situation in Familie’s Like Ours is coming to a sequence. Ownership is suddenly worthless, banks are overwhelmed, the anger and fear of the population is growing before a border closure. In the middle of this chaos, Laura and Elias fall in love (Albert Rudbeck Lindhardt) Head over head. With the peaked caps typical of Denmark on the head and the end in the pocket, they head towards an indefinite future. And with the threats, the pictures are becoming darker – excellently captured by the camera men Sturla Brandth Grøvlen (the Rausch) and Manuel Alberto Claro (Melancholia).
At the latest with the departure from Denmark, the series takes a clear turn – unfortunately also qualitatively. Especially the frustrating decisions Laura and Elias are not plausible, sometimes even quite stupid. For example, when you panicked a tug gang or travel in another scene without a passport. Both risk their lives: Laura for her mother, Elias for Laura. Ultimately, they act like by love, irrational dolls. Above all, the highly intelligent Laura falls victim to the action. Too bad.
Actually, director Thomas Vinterberg could have delivered a big hit with the very real-looking, dystopian Near Future series. In places, however, one is annoyed by the series of wrong decisions. Vinterberg and his co-author Bo Hr. Hansen is actually good at how fragile prosperity can be without the necessary foundation and how important it is to keep a cool head even in emergency situations. Love alone is not enough.
