The Swede lost an even three-setter against three-time grand slam winner Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals.
The 24-year-old Swedish number one, ranked 100 in the world, lost the first set 4–6 and won the second set with reversed numbers. The third set had to be decided in a tiebreak where the Swiss Wawrinka went up to a 3–0 advantage early on and eventually won the tiebreak with 7–5 and the set with 7–6.
37-year-old Wawrinka, former world number three, has passed the peak of his tennis career, now ranked 284 in the world, but is still in the semi-finals in Metz. Waiting there is either 31-ranked Dane Holger Rune or 44-ranked Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan.
