YMCA honors 11 local young people with awards

YMCA of Southwestern Ontario honored 11 young people at the 10th Chatham-Kent YMCA Celebration of Youth Awards.

More than 60 people, including Celebration of Youth committee members, staff and sponsors, were at the Chatham-Kent YMCA for Wednesday’s event.

The Celebration of Youth recognizes those aged 17 to 20 whose “outstanding talents and achievements have made a difference” in the community.

“The awards focus on youth who have demonstrated leadership, sensitivity to others, innovation, development of personal talents, overcoming personal challenge and service to community,” a release said.

Special consideration is given to youth facing financial barriers.

Winners in each category received a $1,000 award.

Andrew Lockie, YMCA of Southwestern Ontario’s chief executive, and Krista Gillespie, youth engagement vice-president, brought greetings from senior leadership.
