Yleisradios sports reporting pioneer Juha Jokinen has died

Yleisradio’s long-time sports reporter and Urheiluruutu’s screen face Juha Jokinen has died at the age of 85 from a sudden illness on the tennis court on Wednesday.

Born in 1937 Juha Jokinen is one of the pioneers of Finnish sports reporting and especially TV reporting, whose voice brought many of the most significant sporting events of the 20th century into Finnish homes.

Jokinen began his extensive television career at Yleisradio in 1961. From 1979, he worked as a regular reporter for Yleisradio until 1993. Jokinen ended his career as a commentator at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

Jokinen is remembered as the narrator of great Finnish sports moments. Perhaps his most memorable narration is Tapio Korjusen Gold medal throw at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.

Jokinen also distinguished himself as the legendary voice of the Wimbledon tennis tournament, F1 competitions and Jukola’s message.

At the 2014 Sports Gala, Jokinen was awarded for his work with the Blue and White Voices of Sports recognition.
