Hong Kong has adopted a tough new security law, which will give the regime even greater opportunities to crack down on political discontent.

According to the bill that has now been voted through, for example, anyone found guilty of treason or rebellion must be sentenced to life imprisonment.

The legal package was drawn up with inspiration from the strict rules that apply in other parts of the dictatorship of China. The security laws there have stifled most of the opposition in the country.
