Yellowstone fans couldn’t wait for their favorite series to return. But with the return of season 5, the worst fears were confirmed.
Yellowstone Season 5B Spoilers: Patriarch John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, not only left the series riding off into the sunset, he was killed. And some fans were anything but impressed.
Yellowstone director defends her controversial episode and the death of John Dutton
Director Christina Voros has already contributed ten episodes of Yellowstone and was also involved in the spin-off 1883. She now told the Hollywood Reporter how strange she initially found the backlash against her latest western episode:
I was reading Twitter and it’s strange how many people seemed upset that John Dutton was killed, even though they knew Kevin [Costner] himself said he would not return to the show. I think even given this information, people don’t want it to be true.
The reaction to the events of the episode Desire is the only thing that matters
but basically they weren’t wrong at all. Voros continues:
In a strange way, it is life imitating art. There were many people who were outraged that John was killed – and one should be outraged that he was killed. The characters are outraged that he was killed. So in a strange way that’s the point. You shouldn’t think that’s OK at all.
It’s been clear since the trailer for the rest of the season that Yellowstone fans can’t relax at all. Beth (Kelly Reilly) is convinced that her hated brother Jamie (Wes Bentley) is responsible for her father’s fate. Are we in for a bloody retaliation?
