Macronist Yaël Braun-Pivet was re-elected on Thursday, July 18, 2024 as President of the National Assembly following a close vote in three rounds with 220 votes, ahead of André Chassaigne who obtained 207 votes. The 577 new deputies voted for their president from among six declared candidates, in a chamber deeply fragmented into three blocs – New Popular Front, presidential camp and National Rally. A crucial vote to give the political color of the next government.

At the end of a suspenseful election, the 53-year-old deputy from Yvelines, west of Paris, therefore finds her “perch” after dissolutionthanks in particular to the support of the right which reached an agreement with Macron’s party.
In addition to these three candidates, also in the running were: Liot MP (centre) Charles de Courson, Horizons MP Naïma Moutchou and MP Philippe Juvin for the Republican Right (LDR, ex-Les Républicains).
After an inaugural speech that was received rather coolly by part of the hemicycle, the RN dean of the National Assembly, José Gonzalez (81 years old), gave way to a secret ballot. In the first round, the communist André Chassaigne, on behalf of the left-wing alliance Nouveau Front populaire, came out on top with 200 votes, ahead of the National Rally candidate Sébastien Chenu (142 votes) and the outgoing president Yaël Braun-Pivet (124 votes). All three remained, as did Charles de Courson (Liot, 18 votes), for the second round, which was also decided by an absolute majority of votes cast. Two candidates, Philippe Juvin (LR, 48 votes) and Naïma Moutchou (Horizons, centre right, 38 votes) announced their withdrawal.
In the second round, Yaël Braun-Pivet came out on top with 210 votes, just ahead of the communist André Chassaigne who obtained 202 votes. Distanced, the candidate of the National Rally Sébastien Chenu (143 votes) nevertheless decided to stay for the third round which was decided by relative majority. The centrist Charles de Courson (Liot) obtained 12 votes in the second round.
In the third round, Yaël Braun-Pivet was re-elected with 220 votes. André Chassaigne obtained 207 votes, and Sébastien Chenu 141 votes.
” The vote of the French women and men (in the legislative elections of June 30 and July 7, editor’s note) is a vote that was stolen today by an unnatural alliance ” between Macron’s party and the right, said the communist deputy, beaten by 13 votes, in the corridors of the Assembly.
