Chinese President Xi Jinping was re-elected on Sunday for a third term as Party Chairman of the Communist Party.

With the re-election of the 69-year-old leader, the party scraps the limit of two five-year mandate periods that has prevailed since 1982.

Xi Jinping, who came to power in 2012, is expected by some observers to try to stay on for life.

On Sunday, the Communist Party also appointed a new permanent committee consisting of seven members, of which four are new. The committee, the party’s highest decision-making body, is dominated by Xi Jinping’s allies.
