Xbox DirectStorage tech comes to PC gaming

DirectStorage technology, which was first used on Xbox Series X and S consoles, has now transitioned to the PC side.

It enables features such as loading times on new generation Xbox consoles and Quick Resume, which allows players to instantly return to their recordings of different games on the dashboard. DirectStorage technology now it has been made available to companies that develop games for the PC platform. PC games will be able to take advantage of this technology starting today.

What is DirectStorage technology?

DirectStorage technology developed by Microsoft allows large amounts of compressed data on the SSD to be streamed directly to the GPU, without forcing it to be decompressed by the CPU. According to Microsoft, with the transition of this technology to PC, a new era begins for fast loading times and detailed worlds in PC games, allowing developers to take full advantage of the speed of the latest storage devices.

One of the first games to take advantage of this technology is the recently delayed Forspoken. At the Game Developers Conference event to be held at the end of March, developer Luminous Productions is scheduled to give a speech about how they plan to apply the technology to the game. On the other hand, it will take some time for players to see the technology in practice, because the game will not be released until October.

Although DirectStorage is compatible with Windows 10, Microsoft recommends that players upgrade to Windows 11 for better optimization.
