Wukong to the staff, give them free to play it

The new action adventure Black Myth: Wukong is big on Steam, but it’s huge in China. There are increasing reports that companies are giving the new action adventure to their employees and making it available for them to play.

These are the reports from China: The Strait Times website summarizes 3 news stories from Chinese-language local news reports:

  • The company “Sichuan Muziyang Technology” has given all employees a day off to play Black Myth: Wukong. The campaign is intended to show that they support the Chinese gaming industry and give employees the opportunity to share the gaming experience with friends and colleagues.
  • Shanghai-based gaming publisher Gamera Games has given each employee a digital copy of Black Myth: Wukong.
  • The strategy platform Game Teahouse has given each employee half a day off and refunded them the money they spent on a copy of the game.

China is proud that the game based on their national epic is so well received

What is going on in China? Apparently, China is extremely proud of Black Myth: Wukong, which is considered the first real AAA game developed in China and is enjoying overwhelming success on Steam – especially among Chinese players.

The game uses motifs from the Chinese national epic “Journey to the West”, something the company is particularly proud of.

In China, novels such as “Journey to the West” or “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” have a similar culturally unifying effect as the Bible or the legends of Homer in Western culture. Here in Germany, one could also see the legends of the Brothers Grimm as such a culture-forming story, or perhaps The Sorrows of the Nibelungs.

As The Strait Times reports, the success also seems to be a little scary for the makers of Black Myth: Wukong. The producer is quoted as saying:

“Play slowly, don’t rush to finish the game.”

Has anything like this ever happened before? It is rare that something like this happens. We reported on a case in 2017 when the South Korean MMO giant NCSoft gave all of its employees a Nintendo Switch and the game Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The CEO said he enjoyed the game so much that he wanted to share it with everyone. But there was no day off back then: MMO giant gives 3000 employees a Nintendo Switch and Zelda
