WoW wanted to bring back one of the coolest mechanics from Classic, but is now rowing back

With the upcoming patch 10.1, World of Warcraft gets a new area and a new raid. There should be a return of mechanics from 18 years ago, Nefarian’s famous “class calls”. According to the latest information, Blizzard has now decided against it, even though sound files have already been recorded.

What is this mechanic? The “Class Calls” were a totally unique mechanic in Blackwing Lair. The final boss Nefarian has chosen a player and taken control of him.

These then harmed their own group with their abilities. Depending on the class, different effects have occurred – villains, for example, have poisoned almost the entire raid. The mechanics were so special that even years later, new classes got a call in the ancient raid.

With patch 10.1 “Embers of Neltharion” the class calls should return and directly for all 13 classes. Even the sound files already exist, which the dragon then screams to announce the class. That looks different now.

This is new now: As wowhead found out, the class calls entry has disappeared from the dungeon journal. This means that the ability is no longer listed, i.e. probably no longer used.

At the moment the patch is still being tested and there may be constant changes. It looks like at least this mechanic has now been removed.

Players are banned to make the fight easier

Blizzard doesn’t give a reason why the ability was removed. However, wowhead colleagues report that some raid groups have already considered which players to target.

Since some of the class calls would be significantly heavier than others, they simply wouldn’t have taken those classes with them – and instead packed many of the ones whose effect is particularly light.

Since Blizzard has represented the philosophy “bring the player, not the class” for many years, the decision here is obvious. Even in the comments, some fans are disappointed, but secretly relieved.

Especially effects like the druid’s, which turns him into a random shape every 6 seconds, would be a little more annoying than challenging. The ability was simply too cumbersome for “casual” groups in particular.

WoW is going at a crazy pace – when is the big crash coming?
