WoW needs exactly what Final Fantasy XIV saved back then

Asmongold is one of the biggest streamers on Twitch and even with his second account zackrawrr he still makes it into the top 25. There he was recently critical of World of Warcraft. He wishes for a reboot, a kind of “A Realm Reborn”.

What exactly is Asmongold asking for? In a stream he explained that WoW needs a complete restart. It is now too overloaded and too complex. Newcomers would have great problems understanding the content. Even veterans would now simply outsource many things to addons.

Appropriately, he showed two video clips in which he compares the buffs and debuffs of Dragonflight and WoW Classic. It is striking that only one effect can be seen in Classic, while there are twelve debuffs in Retail-WoW alone. It’s not that easy to climb up there.

Asmongold then says, “I think they need to reset the game. Just completely reset the game. Realm Reborn’t that crap!”

He further demanded: “Delete everyone’s mounts, pets, transmogs, toys – delete everything. Get rid of the game that has been FOMO for 15 years and that people don’t want to get into because they haven’t played in 15 years.”

A Realm Reborn was the salvation for FFXIV, but does WoW really need it?

What does Asmongold mean by his statement? With “Realm Reborn’t den Mist” the streamer refers to the major revision of Final Fantasy XIV. In 2011 the MMORPG was taken offline after strong criticism and returned in 2013 with many revisions.

However, the game lacked all kinds of basics at the time, including quest logs, side quests, dungeons, enemy level displays or an option for customized key assignments. So it was a much bigger mess than retail WoW.

Our editor Irina Moritz wrote about her experiences with the original Final Fantasy here:

Is Asmongold right in his claim? Partly definitely. The sheer volume of content and the fact that you’re at least 15 years too late put some players off. One of them is our MMORPG author Mark Sellner, who has never played WoW himself.

Two weeks ago we were talking about this topic and he made exactly the same arguments as Asmongold: too much story, too much content, too complex, no real starting point to finally get into.

A full reboot would certainly draw some players into the world the way WoW Classic drew me back then.

Whether the MMORPG needs such a radical step as Final Fantasy XIV is certainly debatable. After all, there have been some drastic adjustments with Shadowlands, for example in the level process and the max level. What do you say to that? Feel free to write your opinion in the comments.

Who is Asmongold anyway? Asmongold is one of the biggest streamers on Twitch. In the last 7 days he is the 23rd most watched streamer (via Sullygnome).

He actually became known as a WoW nerd, but in recent years he has played through a number of other MMORPGs, including Final Fantasy XIV, New World, Lost Ark, Tower of Fantasy and Blue Protocol.

Most recently, the streamer not only complained about the complexity of WoW, but also about monetization: Twitch streamer Asmongold complains about new microtransactions in WoW: “Blizzard has thrown in the towel”.
