WoW is removing a feature you were laughing about 7 years ago

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

World of Warcraft Dragonflight brought back many old, popular features. But one thing is now being scrapped – and probably forever.

After almost 19 years, World of Warcraft is probably one of the MMORPGs with the most features ever. But not all of them were well received or even used by the community. One of them is now being “quietly removed” from the game – the Twitter integration.

What is this feature? Twitter integration has allowed players to link their WoW account to Twitter since patch 6.1 in the Warlords of Draenor expansion. You could then send tweets directly from World of Warcraft and provide them with a screenshot, for example.

Back then, “selfies” were already a big trend and people wanted to jump on that a little jokingly and had called on the heroes of Azeroth to share their adventures on Twitter, preferably with funny or entertaining pictures.

However, the feature never really took off and many may not even know that it even exists – like the first version of voice chat in WoW back then.

Why is Blizzard shutting down the feature? Even if Blizzard does not give any specific reasons, two circumstances in particular should speak for it:

  • The feature has been quite unpopular since its introduction. While it was initially used by a few, over the months and years it has practically fallen into oblivion.
  • Twitter now wants money for using the API, which is why Blizzard would have to pay regularly for the feature.
  • A function that regularly costs money and at the same time is not used by the players is of little use. Therefore, the feature is more or less secretly “buried”.

The infamous patch 6.1 gets even worse: All in all, patch 6.1 was not under a good star at the time of Warlords of Draenor. For many it was considered the “Twitter patch” or the “Selfie patch” because since then the selfie camera has been a toy.

The fact that one of these features is now subsequently deleted makes for a bit of Schadenfreude. Some people complain that in future it will no longer be possible to make fun of the Twitter integration. Others, on the other hand, find the removal of the function to be the perfect reason, such as User Dreadsurge in the official WoW forum:

And with that, literally the only thing patch 6.1 added to the game is gone. This strengthens Patch 6.1 as the worst patch in World of Warcraft history.

(I know this was done because of the change to the Twitter API, but I certainly don’t miss an opportunity to poke fun at Patch 6.1.)

Have you ever used the Twitter integration? Or did you not know until just now that this is even possible in WoW?

Elsewhere there was something new: you farm the most exhausting reputation faction twice as fast!
