WoW has one of the best quests of all time right now and you should play it

A new quest in World of Warcraft is exciting many right now. It might be one of the best quest lines WoW has ever had.

Some complain that content in World of Warcraft is hidden behind “Timegates”. This was also true of a blue dragonflight questline that has been accessible since last Wednesday’s maintenance. This questline has been overlooked by many as it takes place a bit “outside” of the Zaralek Caverns storyline.

But that’s a big mistake: Because the quest line is one of the best of all time and combines story from all expansions of the past.

What is this quest line? The series starts with the mission “The Veiled Ossuary” and you can take it in Valdrakken or at Kalecgos in the Azure Mountains.

After only a few blue dragons have answered the call of Kalecgos in the Dragonflight campaign, he, together with the simulacrum of Sindragosa, tries to find more blue dragons and slowly fulfills the role of the swarm again.

The quest line is one that you should tackle with some time – and preferably without hanging in the Discord or watching any YouTube videos. It’s packed with optional dialogue, lots of little details, and most importantly, it’s a reunion with countless ancient characters that haven’t been heard of in a long time.

Kalecgos needs your help – he wants to round up the remaining blue dragons.

Tombstones for the blue dragons

The series begins with a little journey alongside Senegos – that’s the ancient blue dragon you met in Azsuna in Legion. He has the task of managing the tombstones of the blue dragonflight and keeping them up to date.

Dragons have their names engraved on tombstones while they are still alive, and these are then updated.

The mission hits a sore point emotionally. Because while we update the tombstones together, it should bring back some memories, especially for long-time veterans. After quite a few names, we’re changing the entry from “alive” to “was killed by adventures,” “fell to the Legion,” or “died in the Nexus War.”

If you don’t take the time to really read the entries here, you’re missing out on a nostalgic journey through WoW’s past and also the experiences of your own character.

The story of the blue dragons is more of a “side story” in patch 10.1 – because it’s actually about the things from this trailer:

WoW: Patch 10.1 Embers from Neltharion is live – you can expect that from now on

However, the quest line does not end after this “funeral”. Kalecgos gives you the task of scouring the rest of the world for more members of the blue dragonflight – and he means that literally.

Do you remember Azuregos, the former world boss from Azshara? Mages still dealt with him in Legion – now everyone gets to see what he’s been up to in the Nexus for the last few years.

Or do you still remember Haleh? This is a blue dragon in the form of a high elf in Winterspring, scouring the land for magical relics. She was already a quest giver in “Vanilla” and her research continued in Cataclysm. In the course of the quest we learn that she is still searching for dangerous relics in Winterspring and must convince her to interrupt her never-ending task for a while.

Haleh has to be convinced first – even Sindragosa can’t change her mind directly.

Theramore is also worth a look. The city was devastated by Garrosh with a mana bomb – and now new mages have gathered there.

In the course of the quest line you travel around the world. You visit Winterspring, travel to Northrend, drop by Booty Bay and see what the blue dragons have been up to for the last few years and the problems they have been struggling with. Most of these quests are voiced – Blizzard put a lot of effort into it.

I don’t want to spoil the end of the story at this point, because you should experience that for yourself. But just getting there is a journey through the long history of World of Warcraft, connecting many events and showing the impact of major changes in the world – from the Lich King Arthas to the portal to the shadowlands.

Incidentally, there is a special extra for all casters who own the Legendary “Dragon’s Fury, Tarecgosa’s Last Rest” from the Cataclysm expansion. After the quest line, you can complete a bonus quest to put Tarecgosa’s spirit to rest as well. You will then receive Tarecgosa as a permanent mount that is no longer attached to the staff! However, the mount is – so far – not suitable for dragon riding, even if that will probably change in a coming patch.

How did you like the quest line?
