WoW and Guild Wars 2 are celebrating their high player numbers and good revenue

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

The big gaming companies have published their quarterly figures for the fourth quarter of 2022 and thus for the whole of last year. The developments in WoW and Guild Wars 2 in particular are positive. But a lot has also happened in other MMORPGs this week. We look back at the most important news of the week.

The highlights of the week:

The excitement of the week: Twitch streamer Tectone accidentally shared the subject of an email saying he received $35,000 in sponsorship for playing Lost Ark. This is being discussed critically and some viewers are now calling for not to support big streamers with donations and subscriptions because they would already earn enough.

The discussion of the week: While Dragonflight was able to retain more players, fewer players returned when Dragonflight launched. Cortyn wrote a special about the current situation:

WoW is better but has fewer players – how can that be?

The week in the podcast: In the podcast MMO News, Alexander Leitsch and Mark Sellner are again talking about the most important news about MMORPGs this week. Topics included the raid scandal in Final Fantasy XIV, the anniversary in Lost Ark and the MMORPG Quinfall, which just sounds too good on paper.

WoW removes feature no one ever wanted

This is what happened in the big MMORPGs:

  • WoW announced the retirement of a feature that players were laughing about 7 years ago. Also, there is currently a bug in the auction house that is costing Cortyn thousands of gold every day. A curious story also revolves around a 19-year-old white item that is suddenly worth millions in gold.
  • In Final Fantasy XIV, a popular unofficial feature has been shut down due to a dispute between two players. Also, house demolition has been disabled due to the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria (via FFXIV).
  • Lost Ark celebrates its first birthday in the West. Appropriately, there is now an achievement for the players who have logged in on each of the 365 days. Our author Mark Sellner also sums up how his first year with Lost Ark went: Lost Ark really sucked after 4 months – 1 year later I love it even more.
  • We spoke to Creative Director Rich Lambert about the new ESO expansion, and he explained what makes the new class special. Additionally, our author Melli wrote a column explaining why 2023 is going to be great for ESO.
  • Guild Wars 2 held an in-depth preview livestream of the upcoming balance update (via Twitch). The patch will be released on February 14th.
  • This is what happened with the small MMORPGs:
