Between November 20 and December 18, 2022, 32 teams participated in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Was the atmosphere festive in this Emirate which is not known to be a footballing country? Even before the end of the competition, News cookies had joined Olivier Pron. He is part of the RFI sports team present in Doha, which brought the competition to life for listeners. This episode was originally released on December 1, 2022.
In this episode of News cookiesrecorded on November 30, 2022, Olivier Pron explains that he particularly follows the Senegal team and that he is very happy that the Teranga Lions have qualified for the round of 16. Sportingly, continues our journalist, there have been surprises during these first ten days of competition and this is not without interest. Olivier is more mixed on the atmosphere that reigns in Doha, the capital of Qatar. The stadiums are not full, there are supporters, but very few are Qatari and in the streets, we cannot say that we are witnessing an effervescence. We also address the issue of human rights and migrant workers, but also FIFA’s threat of a yellow card for teams that during a match wear the rainbow armband symbol of diversity. Without forgetting the question of alcohol, prohibited from consumption in the streets, but solutions exist. Unlike previous editions, the location unit is also different. Eight stadiums host the matches, four are in Doha and the others are located as far away as fifty kilometers from the capital and are accessible by metro. It also changes the way journalists work, explains Olivier Pron. This is the fifth time that our colleague has covered a football World Cup and he never said he had experienced such a start to the competition. Good listening.
