of the United States Ryan Crouser proved once again why he is the best shot putter in the world – perhaps of all time.
Crouser, 30, said before the race on Instagram that two blood clots had been found in his leg. Crouser was still able to travel to Budapest for the World Championships.
Earlier on Saturday, the ME man, who had easily cleared the shot put qualification, already hit 22.63 in the opening round of the final.
In the second round, the competition record 22.98 was broken. In the final round, all the floodgates opened, when Crouser smashed a wild race record at the end and was only five centimeters away from his world record with a result of 23.51.
– Tonight’s performances were the best performances of my life, Crouser rejoiced.
The last 20 days have been difficult for the ball mortar. Crouser said health problems and little preparation for the Games made the job challenging.
There are also two Olympic gold medals in the trophy cabinet of the experienced ball giant. He did the ME push in May.
– I did my second best result and was only five centimeters short of the world record. This is my best performance so far.
– In a situation like this, you have to do what you can. I’m really proud of this.
Missing the World Cup was close
The big surprise of the competition was Italy, who won the silver Leonardo Fabbri with his handsome record of 22.34. The Italian’s penultimate push was still clearly longer than his record, but it was marked as overstepped.
The bronze was taken by the experienced United States Joe Kovacs.
It was close to Crouser not competing in Budapest at all.
A blood clot in the leg is no small matter. A blood clot in the legs can cause a life-threatening pulmonary blood clot.
The medical team around Crouser explained the risks to the athlete before the decision to go to Hungary. He was given medicine that made him feel better.
– It was really close. Doctors said there are certain risks. They said I will make the decision. Me and my family are thinking about it.
– However, I have had people who have helped me. I am happy to be able to compete here.
Many star athletes have missed this year’s World Championships. Crouser’s mentality is different.
– As a general athlete, you train for the World Championships. They are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I didn’t want to miss this.
After all this, Crouser is mostly relieved.
– I am more relieved that I was able to compete. My goal was to be here.
