World champion in high jump dead aged 42

According to reports to Newtwerk24 so is the South African high jumper Jacques Freitag who passed away – now the police are investigating murder.

Jacques Freitag turned 42 years old.

He was reported missing as early as June 17th.

Freitag is best known for his WC gold in 2003, where he shared the podium with Stefan Holm.

“People shouldn’t die at that age”

Stefan Holm has spoken out in Aftonbladet on Freitag’s passing:

– It is shocking, of course. He was quite a few years younger than me.

When asked about his relationship with Freitag during the time they competed against each other, Holm answers:

– Well, we probably had no contact in that way. I didn’t really have that with any of my competitors and he was my biggest competitor then and there. We weren’t polar or anything.
