World central kitchen’s founder on the attack: Not an accident

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a public apology following the incident. The Israeli military believes that they hit the wrong time because it was night.

– It was a mistake, a misidentification, at night, in a war situation, under very difficult conditions, says military commander Herzi Halevi, in a statement.

But WCK founder José Andrés told Reuters that the attack was aimed at them “systematically, car by car” and that it was not an accident. The organization was coordinated with Israel who knew where they were, he says.

Satellite images that CNN verified shows at least one support vehicle was clearly marked with WCK’s logo and that the cars traveled long distances apart.

Aid organizations like WCK are especially important during armed conflicts like this, says Michael Schulz, professor of peace development research.

    – This organization also has a special role to the extent that they actually work on both sides, he tells SVT.

    Several countries condemn

Several countries have condemned the attack, including France, Canada and the United States. British authorities call the air raid “horrific”. The United States has called for a “swift and thorough investigation” and President Joe Biden said in a statement that “the conflict in Gaza is one of the worst in recent memory in terms of the number of aid workers who have been killed.”

Egeland: More Palestinian aid workers have been killed

Since the Gaza war broke out in October, nearly 200 aid workers have been killed. Most of them are Palestinians, points out Jan Egeland, head of Norwegian refugee aid NRC.

    – The world is surprised, but 200 Palestinian employees have already been killed, he says during a press conference.
