Working on a New Sony Remote

Sony is working on a new controller that allows players to draw their own buttons using conductive ink.

Sony has always been at the forefront of bringing innovative ideas to the gaming industry. However, sometimes these innovative ideas can be quite unusual. A new patent published by Sony has given gamers a completely customizable new Sony remote working on it. This patent states that users can hand-draw the button layout, spacing, and shape using electric ink.

New Sony Remote: Will Let You Draw Your Own Buttons with Conductive Ink

This legal document, called “USER-CUSTOMIZED FLAT COMPUTER SIMULATION CONTROLLER FIELD”, explores providing full control so that users can fully customize a controller. According to the technical details, the user will need a regular Sony controller to set up the customizable controller. During setup, the custom controller’s hand-drawn buttons will need to be pressed along with the buttons on the regular controller. This will allow the customized controller to know which drawn button corresponds to which button on the regular Sony controller.

The patent also states that users will be able to choose the shape of the controller. Some examples mention a parallelepiped device, although spherical and other shape options are also discussed.

A player with a customized controller base can use conductive ink to draw on the layout, size, and shape of the buttons as desired. The document also mentions that the controller has a special “anti-fatigue” button that can change how certain buttons work. For example, users can press and release a button once, but the system will still assume it’s being held down. Or, a player can press a button once, tricking the system into thinking it’s been pressed twice. This feature will allow for more customization and opportunities during gameplay.

Sony argues that current controllers may not meet everyone’s needs. This could be due to any number of issues, including players being disabled. Having already addressed these concerns with the Access Controller, Sony could offer a more intuitive solution with the ability to draw buttons by hand. The proposed controller may also feature audio feedback to assist players with certain disabilities.
