The company initiated its emergency response plan after the vapor release, notified “appropriate regulators and agencies,” and was working with first responders, it said.
“Our current priorities are to protect the safety of people in the area and minimize any impacts to the environment,” Plains Midstream said.
Notice of the vapor release was posted on the Sarnia-Lambton Alerts system just before 1 pm Friday.
The company issued a Code 8, indicating an internal emergency response event, according to the local organization, Community Awareness Emergency Response (CAER).
Plains Midstream runs a natural gas liquids fractionation and storage facility on Plank Road.
Emergency sirens could be heard in neighborhoods near the facility about the time the notice was issued.
“The sirens. . . were industry site-specific sirens set off in response to the incident at Plains Midstream,” city spokesperson Steve Henschel said by email.
