Worker dies of injuries received at Stelco plant in Nanticoke

A worker who was one of two people seriously injured in an April 25 incident at Stelco Inc. Lake Erie in Nanticoke has died in hospital.

The 32-year-old man, identified by his union as Gabriel Cabral, was one of two workers badly burned while working at the Stelco plant. The men were not employees of Stelco but of John Kenyon Limited, a Hamilton-based metal roofing and cladding company that does industrial projects.

According to the Ministry of Labour, Cabral and another Kenyon employee were working with “materials” when they were burned.

On Tuesday, the ministry was notified that Cabral had died and said “Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of this worker.”

On Thursday, the ministry issued two orders and four requirements to Kenyon and one order to Stelco but, with the investigation ongoing, declined to comment any further.

Cabral’s union, Local 537 of Sheet Metal Workers, also offered condolences to the family, friends and coworkers of Cabral.

John Kenyon Limited did not respond to a request for comment.

A GoFundMe account was set up just after the accident to assist Cabral’s family, with the expectation that he would be hospitalized in a burn unit for months. It quickly surpassed a goal of raising $30,000 and, on Thursday, stood at almost $50,000.
