The written tests for the national patent diploma common to all candidates will take place on Thursday June 30 and Friday July 1, 2022 for the normal session and Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 September 2022 for the replacement session (Paris time). In mainland France, the history and geography and moral and civic education test will take place on Friday, July 1 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.. It corresponds to the third test after French and maths: lasting two hours, it can earn a certain number of points.
Ninth-grade students residing in North America took their exams on June 1 and 2, 2022. For the history-geo exam for the patent in the general series, three great exercises were presented to them. The first, assessed on twenty points, concerned the analysis and understanding of historical documents. It focused on the History of France and on the theme “French men and women in a redesigned Republic”. The supporting documents were Charles de Gaulle’s investiture speech to the National Assembly on June 1, 1958 (enough to mark the occasion by passing this test on June 1!), but also an extract from a page of the newspaper Le Monde on which appear the results of the 1962 referendum on the election of the President of the Republic by direct universal suffrage. The student had to answer five questions based on these elements.
the second exercise, also on twenty points, fell within the domain of geography. The objective here was to test the student’s abilities in terms of mastering different languages to reason and use geographical landmarks, the major geographic theme addressed being: “Why and how to develop the territory?”. They worked on a diagram, with writing of a legend and inscription of the missing elements (such as the transport axes), then had to write about twenty lines on the way in which the overseas territories are weakly integrated into their regional space but implement improvements that value them.
Finally, the third and final exercise was rated out of ten points. It required a mobilization of skills coming under themoral and civic education, on the theme: “The individual or collective commitment of citizens in a democracy”. The college students had to rely on a document describing the meeting of the Turones district council in Tours in Indre-et-Loire to answer four questions relating to the democratic life of the country and the forms of civic engagement.
Third year students in the general series residing in the countries of group 1 abroad took their patent tests on June 14 and 15, 2022. Their subject of history-geo and EMC (Moral and civic education) included three major exercises :
In the first exercise, scored on twenty points and entitled “Analyze and understand documents in history”, the theme addressed was “French and French in a redesigned Republic”. Questions had to be answered on two documents: “Testimony of Denise Boucheron, quoted in the special issue of the newspaper Ouest-France, April 29, 2015” (an elderly woman testifying on women’s right to vote in France obtained after the second world War) ; and a photograph taken on August 26, 1970 in Paris, published on May 1, 2019 in the magazine Hérodote “Women through History”, and captioned thus “On August 26, 1970, in Paris, women were arrested when they want to lay a wreath of flowers, under the Arc de Triomphe, for the wife of the Unknown Soldier. This is the beginning of the women’s liberation movement (MLF).”
In the second exercise, marked on twenty points and entitled “Master different languages to reason and use geographical landmarks”, it was necessary to deal with a theme of geography: “Territorial dynamics of contemporary France”. The instruction for the “Constructed development” part was “In the form of a constructed development of about twenty lines and based on a case study or on concrete examples seen in class, describe the different spaces of a urban area and explain their dynamics. You may be able to illustrate your development using a sketch.” A second part followed, “Understanding and practicing another language; using markers”. It was then necessary to name numbered territories on the map, then locate the Seine and Rhône there, and finally, four urban areas to choose from.
Within the third exercise, scored out of ten points and titled “Mobilizing skills relating to moral and civic education”, the stated purpose was “Building a civic culture”. Five questions relating to participatory democracy had to be answered, based on two documents: an article by Angela Bolis, published on February 7, 2020 in Le Monde, “Municipal elections 2020: Saillans, village laboratory of participatory democracy” ; and an infographic on participatory democracy actions answering the question “Does your local authority implement participatory democracy actions with its users?” (Source: Brigitte Menguy, “Local democracy is advancing at an ant’s pace”, La gazette.fr, June 22, 2020).

At the patent, the value of each test is not calculated on the basis of a coefficient, but with a counting of points. As a reminder, you can obtain a maximum of 800 points during the patent. You need a minimum of 400 points out of 800 to pass. Then, when you collect more points, you can get mentions: you need at least 480 for the mention fairly well, at least 560 for the mention well, and 640 for the mention very well. The history, geography and moral and civic education test can bring in up to 50 dots, it is therefore important.
The DNB history-geography and moral and civic education test lasts 2 hours and is divided into 3 different exercises. It is scored out of 50 points (against 100 points for mathematics, and 100 points for French): 20 points for history, 20 points for geography, 10 points for EMC. What are the exercises?
- The first is a document study. Candidates must answer 5 questions, including identifying the subject of the document, its context, its date and its author. There are also three questions for which you must seek the answers in the document distributed, supplementing with your knowledge.
- The second exercise is a reasoned paragraph. It must be about twenty lines with an introduction, a development, and a conclusion. Subsequently, depending on the discipline, the candidates have a geographical map or a chronological timeline to complete.
- For’EMC testyou have to read and study two or three documents and answer a few questions.
The 2022 patent results fall the first week of July. If the dates of publication of the results vary according to the academies, one thing is certain: you will know your results for the history, geography and moral and civic education test as well as all the other tests for the 2022 patent no later than July 8, 2022. And after the results, it’s time to celebrate the students who obtained the best marks! A republican patent graduation ceremony is organized at each start of the school year for the winners in their college. The academies, in connection with the educational establishments and the elected representatives of the territory – mayors, departmental councillors, etc. – organize each year, an official presentation of the diplomas obtained the previous year. According to the official website of National Education, this ceremony “brings together the educational community and elected officials around the students who complete their common school career”. Its usefulness is to “state the essential role of the school in the Republic and to congratulate the pupils who have obtained their first diploma”. National Education specifies that this makes it possible to erect “models of success”.
