Wood pellet: what is it?

Wood pellet what is it

Granules drink, or pellets of drink, are fuels from by-products of wood processing. These pellets are produced by refining, drying and compacting sawdust, chips, and sometimes even agricultural waste. They take on the appearance of small wooden cylinders some 20 millimeters long and 6 millimeters in diameter.

Everything is done without adding glue or binder. Because the compaction operation is done hot. The lignin present in the wood then behaves like a binder which naturally agglomerates the cellulose. When the matter cools, the pellets simply become hard.

Wood pellets must not be used to fuel a conventional wood appliance. They must be used in devices specially designed for their combustion : pellet stoves, pellet boilers or even pellet inserts.

Advantages of pellets

The interest of the granules is to promote – locally since they occur in France – the waste of the wood industry, waste that was once lost. Their handling is clean and dust-free and they are easier to transport and store than traditional wood logs. They are found in bags, for feeding stoves or inserts, or in bulk. They are then delivered by blower truck. This in the case where the wood pellets feed automatically, by a worm, a wood boiler.

In addition, their homogeneous constitution and low humidity – guaranteed by the quality labels that appear on the bags and provided they are stored in a dry place – improve the combustion and reduces the amount of ash, soot and other wastes produced at only 1%. What to obtain a better return than with a simple log of wood.

Woodoo wood, whose lignin has been replaced by a polymer (by a green chemistry process), is rot-proof, more fire-resistant and translucent when cut into thin strips. It can be used for decoration, for example cars, but also, ultimately, for veneers for homes.
